Monday Morning Musings …

Here I am facing my computer on the first Monday of the year. It is not only the first Monday of the year it is the first Monday in which we are facing real winter weather. December was incredibly mild in temperature and precipitation. So here we go with some musings …

-I made another major goof yesterday. I got the correct outline in the bulletin but I was watching the wrong clock. Just before the worship service began my wife pointed out that the clock at the back of the sanctuary was about 8 minutes slow. We didn’t have time to get a ladder out and correct the clock. So we just reminded ourselves and others that the clock was off and not to count on it. I got into my message and completely forgot that the clock was wrong. I finished at our normal time, only it wasn’t. It was actually 7 minutes past our regular. I felt terrible. People didn’t seem to notice and they weren’t staring at their watches. But I didn’t need those extra 7 minutes, so I felt terrible.

-We had a great time of worship during the music and prayer times. It was a great way to begin a new year.

-We had a lot of people out with illness and I am guessing a few of our older people stayed home because the roads were a little slick. It was the first Sunday with any winter weather.

-Even with all the illness and the condition of the roads our attendance was well above a year ago.

-Our small group met last night for the time in 3 weeks. It was great to be back together. We had some fun conversations, some great laughs and some very deep sharing as well. That is a definition of a great small group meeting.

-The message series that I began yesterday is entitled “Directions” Finding your place in God’s plan. I am very excited, and burdened, for this series of messages. I am convinced that this is critical for how our church will impact our community this year.

-I am approaching my one year anniversary at this church later this month. As I look back I am humbled to see how God has worked in our church this past year.

-We are beginning to pray for our Revival services that will begin in 2 months.

-I am encouraged as I hear that several people in my church are seeking to read the Bible a lot more this year. Getting the Word in people is always a positive thing.

Here’s hoping that you are looking forward to this week and that you can find a few people to encourage.

Monday Morning Musings …

Oops! I had a big oops yesterday, but I did not know it until it was mentioned at lunch. I usually put an outline of my sermon in the bulletin. It has the title, scripture, key points and some blanks you can choose to fill in. It goes along with the power point on the screens. Yesterday I inadvertently submitted my outline from the week before. I don’t look at the outline in the bulletin on Sundays because I don’t need it. I noticed some people looking more intently than normal at the screens when the sermon began, but I didn’t think much of it. I got no clues from people, including my wife, that the printed outline didn’t match what I was saying or what was on the screens. My wife said she assumed that she had somehow picked up a leftover bulletin from last week. I don’t like that it is possible to pick up a bulletin from the week before. (Note to self: besides getting the correct outline in the bulletin, make sure the ones from the week before are no longer available.) The good people in my church didn’t even mention it as they spoke with me following the service. Oops!

Now for some musings from the last Sunday of the calendar year …

-Even with my big goof on the sermon outline people seemed very engaged during the message. Maybe they were having to focus a lot more without the correct outline.

-We did much better with our tech issues this week and my mic even worked. It helps when no one messes with every knob, button and slider on your sound equipment during the week.

-I loved hearing the congregation participating as we sang.

-We had a very good prayer time.

-Attendance was down again as illness and travel continued to have an impact. Even with the lower attendance we still had some new people.

-We have several people going through some very difficult situations. It is a wonderful time for the church to be the church to these people.

-I am beginning a new message series this coming Sunday entitled “Directions”. It is studying and finding God’s direction for each individual. I am really excited for this series. I outlined the series a few weeks ago when I was awakened in the middle of the night.

-It is difficult to see some of our older members going through tough physical issues.

-We had a very positive night on Christmas Eve as individuals and families came to take communion. It was so moving to share with these small groups and reflect on what God is doing in their lives at this time.

-We have been very fortunate with the early winter weather. I don’t expect it to continue, but I am going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Here’s hoping that you have a great time of reflection on this past year and an encouraging time of looking forward to the New Year.

Monday Morning Musings …

I want to start off today with a Happy Birthday wish to my daughter in law. It is actually a slightly belated birthday wish, as her birthday was yesterday. She loves Jesus, she loves my son, she loves my grandkids and she politely endures me. It was so wonderful to spend about 10 days with her and the family recently. Happy Birthday Nicki, sorry it is a few hours late, love you.

Yesterday was a day with some tremendous highs and several low moments as well. Here’s some musings …

-My wife and I cooked breakfast for the church yesterday. We, meaning my wife, went all out. There were special decorating touches on the serving table and there was a wide variety of food choices. There was 3 kinds of egg caseroles, there were sausage links, there was banana bread, there was also pancakes with 3 kinds of fruit toppings, with choices of syrup, peanut butter or chocolate chips as well. I helped her with some of the set up and I made and cooked pancakes for an hour.

-It was fun to let people know that this was our Christmas present to the church and a way of saying thank you for their help in getting us to, and supporting us on our trip to Kenya.

-Someone had messed with our sound system and it took more than 30 minutes to figure out what all had been done to the system before we could do sound checks and have a little practice time. The system was all set and working fine on Thursday evening. This was very frustrating.

-I also had to spend several minutes yesterday morning doing some cleaning and straightening up from someone coming in and allowing kids to mess up the nursery and toddler rooms. I have had to do something similar many times in my years of ministry but for some reason it really bothered me yesterday.

-It was encouraging to see our people sitting around talking, getting to know each other better and having real fellowship during the breakfast.

-We had several people not present due to illness and some family situations. As a result we were going to have the children stay in worship for the full hour. When the children heard that they were going to have listen to me instead of their regular children’s workers they begged to have their full children’s church time. I loved hearing that they love their workers and their ministry that much. I choose not to focus on the fact that they didn’t want to be with me. We have great children’s workers and the kids are loving the changes we made several weeks ago.

-On top of our sound system woes my headset microphone chose yesterday morning to not work. Don’t know if it was related to whoever messed up the system or if it was something else. Whatever it was I had to preach holding a mic. I can’t preach with a mic on a stand because I walk around too much.

-In spite of all the sound system stuff the worship service went well. People were engaged during the message and we had a good spirit throughout the service.

-I think the effects of the jet lag from the t Kenyan trip has finally ended. I am very grateful for that fact.

-Our attendance was way down. It appears that illness and some Christmas travel took its toll on the numbers.

-My wife and I enjoyed a great time with one of our Sunday School classes at their Christmas dinner and party yesterday. It was a great cap on the day.

Here’s hoping you are reflecting on the birth of the Savior today. Take time to remember the Christmas season is about life and hope. Smile at someone today who isn’t smiling.

Monday Morning Musings …

Warning: I make no guarantees as to the clarity of this post. I am operating on a few hours of sleep and still recovering from jetlag.

We made it home Friday evening and are still trying to recover after the travel home from Kenya and to the 9 hour time difference. Our trip was fantastic and it was difficult giving goodbye hugs to the family when we left. But it was so good to spend time with them again. Let’s see if I can do a little musing this morning.

-We had our Children’s Christmas program yesterday. It was such a good day. There were more than 20 children involved in the program. Given the number of children attending a few months ago this is a tremendous number. I am so proud of our children’s workers and the progress that has been made in our Children’s ministries.

-The kids did such a good job. We had the obligatory pre-schoolers grabbing for and fighting over the microphones. We had kids who shined being up front and some who froze. All of which adds to the charm of a kids program.

-I love the simple message of the children’s program. Focusing on the innkeeper of Bethlehem and asking if we have room for Christ.

-There was great humor and serious thought in the dialog and songs.

-We had a great attendance. W, I mean really great attendance. We had many more than we had on Easter Sunday. It was great to see that our people really took to heart my urging to invite people to come. That makes 3 Sundays in the past 6 or 7 weeks in which we had more in worship than we had last Easter Sunday.

-It was great to meet some parents and grandparents of our children. Praying for those who live near us to return.

-It was so much fun to see the huge smiles on the faces of the core people of our church. Those who were here when we arrived and who have served so diligently for years. They are thrilled to see the growth that is happening and are not bemoaning someone sitting in their spot or that they are having to park a little further away. Their attitude is one of the keys as to why we are growing.

-It was great that I did not need to preach yesterday. You will rarely hear me say that, because I am passionate about preaching. But given my travel and the effects of jetlag it is probably good for all that I wasn’t attempting to preach a sermon yesterday. It would have been an adventure, but I am not sure it would have been helpful to anyone.

-Our small group had their Christmas party last evening. It was great that someone in the group took control and hosted the group for us last night. All we had to do was show up. We could just relax and enjoy the time with this great group. There were some great laughs and even a few moments of sharing.

-In anticipation of how I might feel on this day I avoided any meetings or appointments for today. That is proving to be a very wise decision. I am really having trouble focusing and even carrying on a conversation is interesting this morning. I do have a hospital visit I need to make later. Here’s hoping I make it in and out of the hospital without someone thinking I need to be admitted.

I am missing my grandkids and kids this morning. But I am so grateful for the opportunity to travel to Kenya and spend time with them. Here’s hoping you have better focus than I do today. I pray that you will sense the comfort of the Lord’s presence and the power of his love today. Now I wonder if I can sneak in a nap without anyone realizing I am asleep.

Monday Morning Musings from Kenya …

A Sunday always feels different when I am not in my home church and when I did not preach. This Sunday felt very different for some awesome reasons. First we were in Kenya which is a few thousand miles from home. Second we were in worship with our kids and grandkids here in Kenya. Some here are some of my musings …

-The 9 hour time difference allowed me to pray for the service and people back home as they were worshiping. That was kind of cool.

-I was amused to see that the church we attended here had 3 times as many people in attendance at the end of the service as they had when the service began. It is possible that some of my people back home are just trying to be like the Kenyans given the time they arrive for worship.

-The service we attended was 90% in English, though it was English with a heavy accent.

-I could get used to not having to have any furnace, no need for a foyer because you gather and fellowship outdoors and to walk out the doors of the church look at the mountains. Could we get some mountains in the corn fields around our church back home?
-One of the highlights of our time of worship yesterday was to look down the row and see my grandsons with their bibles open when the pastor announced the scripture. It was a proud and heartwarming moment I will cherish for a long time.

-The more interesting service would have been the one following the one we attended, that second service is a Swahili congregation. That service is longer and more energetic. Since it was completely in Swahili I don’t think I would have understood much. The service we attended had a couple of songs in Swahili and I followed them well because I recognized the tune. That was fun.

-Time is treated much differently in Kenya. If I were serving here that would take some adjusting on my part.

-We walked to church. I walk to church back home, but the walk is about 50 yards back home. The walk here was a little longer, but not bad. The biggest differences in this walk was the up and down of the terrain, the beauty of the flowers and plants and seeing mountains. I see no mountains on my regular walk to church.

-I loved seeing how many children were in the worship service here yesterday. Prompted me to pray for our children and children’s workers back home.

-I loved seeing the ministries of this church and noting that their most active ministry was their missions ministry.

-We spent great time with our family yesterday afternoon and evening playing games. Some of my greatest memories of our family are from times when we are playing games, or sitting around talking following a game.

-My greatest musing from yesterday was being humbled and thankful for all who helped make it possible for us to make this trip and be able to spend time our family.

Here’s hoping you have musings to reflect on with thanksgiving from your activities on Sunday. I will attempt to post another couple of updates from our time here in Kenya before we leave later this week.

Monday Morning Musings …

(Ok, this is the third try to post this, it is now Wednesday morning and I am having a cup of tea. I think I got my computer issues figured out. If I really have figured things out I will try to put up a few posts about our trip.)

(It is now Tuesday night in Kenya, just got my computer connected. Since I am typing this we obviously made it, some of our stuff was missing but that is for another post. We have gotten initial hugging done, had our first Kenyan pizza, experienced Nairobi traffic and now about to crash and hopefully sleep all night. I am operating on about 5 ½ hours of sleep the past 56 hours.)

I am typing this sitting in an airport in Amsterdam, so I am not positive whether this is a morning, or afternoon musings for you. My wife and I are about to board our 3 flight since yesterday afternoon on our way to Kenya to spend time with our son, daughter in law and 5 grandkids. This flight is the final leg of the trip. We are so excited to see them, hug them and spend time with them. We haven’t seen them for nearly a year and half since they began their missionary work in Kenya.

Yesterday was a very good day, of course it would have a very good day no matter what since we were beginning our trip to Kenya. But it really was a very good day in the life of our church. On to the musings…

-We focused the whole worship service on grace. The songs, the prayers and the message all focused on God’s amazing grace.

-There were some powerful moments as we looked at grace and took a fresh look at what it means in our lives.

-We had a lot of children yesterday, this area keeps growing and that is very exciting.

-People were very engaged during the message.

-The church gathered around my wife and I and prayed over us for our trip to Kenya. It was a very meaningful and moving moment in our worship.

-I loved observing some people sing a little differently about grace as we moved through our service.

-We had a couple of more visitors in the service. That is always encouraging, especially as we are seeing many visitors transition to become regular attenders and participants.

-We had more in attendance yesterday than we did on Easter Sunday. That is the second time in the past three weeks that has occurred.

-We saw more people step into ministry yesterday.

-I was reminded of how many wonderful people we have serving joyfully in so many areas.

-We got away on time and got to the airport on time. (Thanks Steve and Mike)
-Our luggage all made it in the weight and size guidelines!

We are seeing so many great things happening in our church and it is encouraging and humbling. I will try to blog about our trip a few times, dependent on internet availability. Here’s hoping you are finding something to be excited about this Christmas season.

Monday Morning Musings …

Yesterday was an amazing day for weather, it was mid 50’s on November 23, for here that is amazing. Yesterday was a good day spiritually with some significant conversations and people committing to go deeper in their walk with Jesus Christ. Yesterday was a good day on a personal level as well, but let’s get to the musings so you can see for yourself.

-It was exciting, encouraging, and humbling to see and hear what God is doing in people’s lives in our church.

-It was great to see people making commitments to go deeper in their walk with Christ.

-It was great to hear people share what they are learning.

-Our children’s ministry continues to experience good things and the changes we made are attracting children and getting them, and some of their parents, to attend more often.

-We had no technical glitches yesterday!!!

-In just over 7 days my wife and I will be with our kids and grandkids who are serving in Africa!

-I used a little “Zombie theology” in the message yesterday. That was fun.

-People were very engaged yesterday, in every part of our worship. That makes for a great day.

-Our small group met last night and it was great to be together with them.

-Our attendance was just above our average for the year, that is good, but after the large number last week it felt much smaller. I love that our low Sundays are much larger than our average was a year ago. I especially love that some of the growth is pure evangelism growth.

-Only 2 days until our stateside kids and grandkids arrive at our house for a Thanksgiving celebration!

-I love that the people of our church do a great job of genuinely welcoming new people. Not a perfunctory “hi”, but a real, heartfelt greeting and welcome. Sure makes it easier to invite people to attend and know they will be treated well.

-My cold is so much better than it was last Sunday.

-I love getting questions from people about my messages, including things from a previous week. Shows me they are not only listening, but thinking and processing the message throughout the week.

-I am really excited to preach this coming Sunday. The whole service is going to be about God’s amazing grace. I wish I could get everyone here and preach it today.

-We have many people going through very difficult situations and we have several people who continue to come alongside those who are hurting to help, encourage and comfort.

Here’s hoping you have a week full of thanksgiving. Here’s hoping that if you get full of thanksgiving that you don’t get sick as a result. Here’s hoping you find someone to encourage today.

Monday Morning Musings …

Yesterday was a wonderfully difficult day. It was filled with some great high points and a few low ones. In many ways that is how most Sundays could be described when you are a pastor. Let me share with you how this one came about …

-We had some of the worst technical problems we have had since I have been here. (And that is saying a lot.) The front projector that shows announcements, words to the music and some of my sermon points went out as we began to sing our first song and we never got it working again. This was made even more painful by the fact that the first song was a new one being taught to our congregation.

-The new families that have visited recently have continued to attend and talk like they have chosen to become a part of our church. This is a real encouragement to me, and the congregation, as we have made some changes in our ministry to reach more families and have been praying to impact more families.

-In spite of the technical difficulties during worship there was a wonderful spirit during the entire service.

-I was sick yesterday. In fact I was sick all last week but felt the worst on Sunday. I have a nasty cold that is knocking me for a loop. If I don’t have a cough drop in my mouth or liquid in my throat I cough something terrible. That presents problems while attempting to teach or preach. Thankfully I didn’t have any full blown coughing fits while teaching my class or preaching. I am fearful that if I had everyone might have left.

-Our new approach to Children’s Church is working very well and has been a major factor in attracting a couple of our new families.

-Our small group did not meet last night because my wife and I didn’t want to expose them to our germ infested house since she is also not feeling well. I really missed meeting with them, but I would have been of little value as I was wiped out from the morning.

-We have so many wonderful servants in our church. Yesterday was another time that highlighted their dedication. As many of them were here early to make sure the change in weather with a significant drop in temperature and some light snow would not cause a problem. Week in and week out we have many people at church an hour or two early getting prepared for the morning ministries.

-I love watching our people welcome the newer families to our church. They are warm, genuine and go way beyond just shaking hands.

-The information class I taught the past few weeks to give people more insight into what we believe and the vision of our church has gone very well. It has increased in attendance each week and people have asked great questions.

-We had more in attendance for worship yesterday than we had on Easter Sunday. That is pretty cool for a cold November Sunday.

-I decided to make my sermon a two part message. I didn’t make that decision until about 3/4th of the way through it yesterday. I realized I wanted to go a little further and really lay out some practical steps for them. The message was on “The Key to Live Powerfully”.

-In 2 weeks and a few hours my wife and I will be with our son, daughter-in-law and 5 grandkids in Kenya. We haven’t been able to hug them for nearly a year and half. To say that we are excited about this would be a major understatement.

Here’s hoping this cold moves on. Here’s hoping that you are encouraged today. Here’s hoping that you recognize God’s presence in your life today.

Monday Morning Musings …

Yesterday was a very good day with some tremendous things for which to give praise. I really needed this day. Last week was a struggle for me. I had trouble focusing, had a lot irritating little things happen and still haven’t been able to replace our van that died (see the post from Sunday 11/2). Car shopping doesn’t usually leave me in a good mood and especially when it comes 1 year before I was planning to shop for a vehicle. The great news is that God is faithful and He reminded me of his faithfulness many times last week and especially yesterday. As for the musings ….

-We had a memorable Church 101 class with a couple of new people in attendance. I am impressed by how interested this group is in the church, what we believe and where we are going.

-The best part was seeing someone come back to Christ. That never gets old!

-People were engaged during the music part of worship. I love hearing the congregation sing praises.

-I sang a little of the Spice Girls (see previous post) as part of the sermon. Judge me if you feel the need. Can’t say I don’t keep it interesting and have people always wondering what might happen at church.

-The congregation was very engaged during the message, and that always makes it easier to preach.

-We had another brand new person in attendance.

-1 of the new families from last week returned.

-The attendance in worship was exactly the same as last week which was a good number.

-We had a Concert of Prayer last night. The attendance was more of a small group but the atmosphere was great and it was a very encouraging time of prayer. A few of those attending are already asking when we are doing this again.

-Had a very strange physical thing yesterday. I had felt fine all weekend and Sunday morning. Took a short nap in the afternoon and awoke to feeling lousy. Scratchy throat, cough, runny nose, etc … It just came on with no warning whatsoever. That was just weird.

-3 weeks from tomorrow my wife and I will see our son, daughter-in-law and 5 grandkids who are serving in Africa. We have not been able to squeeze them for 17 months. We are very excited.

-I heard a couple of great reports yesterday of how people are growing in their faith and how God is working in their witness. I really needed to hear those updates.

Here’s hoping you are reminded today that you are not alone, that you are loved and that God has a great plan for you.

Dennis

Monday Morning Musings …

This is a day of celebration. Why? Because every day should be a day of celebration. Why? Because we have so much to celebrate. That was the theme of my sermon yesterday and it seemed that we really did begin to celebrate. This past week has been schizophrenic as far as circumstances in my life. I experienced some tremendous highs and some frustrating lows (see previous post for a couple of examples) but I decided to choose joy and thankfulness in all things. It has really made a difference and I think I am finally beginning to get this thing of celebrating life. So … as you might expect yesterday was a great day! Here are a few musings from this great day …

-The atmosphere and energy in our worship service was outstanding. People were engaged and really participating throughout the service.

-3 of my grandkids spent the weekend with us and therefore were in church with us and that definitely added to it being a great day.

-We had at least twice as many children as we have had on most Sundays and kids equal energy. The best part of that was that even those serving our children were excited after having some many more children. Isn’t that awesome?

-The music part of worship went very well and people were participating with volume. There were only a couple of small technical glitches in the service and that is really good for us.

-We had 2 new families in worship and a family who returned for the second time. These are all local families and have either been seeking to find a church home or have been unchurched.

-People were very engaged during the sermon and that always makes it easier to preach.

-Our small group was down in attendance but we had some great sharing as usual and the personal growth in some of the people is so encouraging.

-5 people came to my Church 101 class to find out more about our local church, our vision and our denomination. It is going to be a fun group.

-After having 3 grandkids, ages 7, 4 and 2 with us for the weekend and traveling 4 ½ hours to see our newest grandchild earlier in the week, my wife and I really enjoyed our Sunday afternoon naps. It was a good tired, but I was still tired.

-In just over 4 weeks we will get to be with our son, daughter-in-law and 5 grandkids who are serving as missionaries in Africa. Let the countdown begin.

-Our attendance was very good yesterday as you might expect with all the visitors. The attendance has been trending upward, but we preachers are sometimes not the most patient when it comes to reaching new people for Christ and experiencing growth in the church.

Here’s hoping that you choose joy today and seek to celebrate all that God is and all that he has for you.
