Monday Musings …

Even on a holiday (at least in the United States) there is much to reflect on this Monday. The musings might bounce around a bit, just giving that warning at the beginning. On to the musings …

-Yesterday’s sermon was on “Learning to Pray” and it became obvious it needed a second message, so this coming Sunday will add to what we learned yesterday.

-I did my best to make the sermon instructional and inspirational. You would have to ask those who listened if that was in fact true.

-There was a great, energetic, almost festive spirit in our worship time. I loved it.

-People were very engaged from the beginning of the service. I think they were even listening to the announcements. That doesn’t always happen.

-We have a lot of people going through some difficult issues and yet they seem to really be seeking God’s direction in everything they are facing.

-Our prayer time in the middle of the service seemed to have some extra meaning yesterday. That was a God thing, and God things are always awesome.

-Our sound and technical issues were okay yesterday but we did have another microphone bite the dust. We really have to get this sound project going.

-We had no first time visitors yesterday. That is not good.

-We had very good attendance for Labor Day weekend. That was a pleasant surprise.

-We had some people not show up for areas of ministry. I need to make sure that we are clear on our schedules and communication of when people are to serve. It was glaring yesterday because one of the areas was among our greeters.

-My practice run of the sermon did not go well yesterday. That always makes me very nervous.

-We had some major issues with our WiFi before our small groups/Sunday School classes began. That took quite a bit of my time getting that sorted out. I probably should get someone else to be the troubleshooter, especially since I really don’t know what I am doing.

-There were many people who hung around and talked with each other after worship. I love seeing, and hearing, that kind of fellowship.

-I am ready for some fall weather.

-I will be immersed in discipleship material for the next few days as I prepare for our first session of discipleship training on Wednesday evening.

-I was able to FaceTime with my 5 year old granddaughter yesterday. The purpose was for her to show me that she lost a tooth. It is right up front in the middle. My favorite part of it, besides seeing her and talking with her, was that the tooth fell out while she was at church and she caught it. How cool was that?

Here’s hoping you make a good catch this week.

Monday Morning Musings …

Back in the saddle again is a theme running through my head this morning. This is my first Monday back at it after about 12 days of vacation. The good news is that I am refreshed and excited. The bad news is that I intended to do some writing and posting during vacation but as we arrived at our destination I realized that our cottage had no wifi. I decided to just unplug and enjoy it. But I am back, and back at it, and this is an awesome Monday. Let me get to the musings …

-Vacation was great. I got spend a lot of uninterrupted time with wife, I always love spending time with her. I slept a lot. I read a lot. I fished. We got to spend time with some old friends and play some Rook with them as well. We spent some great time with my youngest granddaughter, and her parents. I was able to attend my granddaughter’s dedication and even had the privilege to pray over her and her parents. It was great to get away and unplug and it was great to get back home.

-We had a great time celebrating yesterday. Several months ago we began emphasizing praying for our unsaved friends and family. I encouraged people to focus on 3 people and pray fervently for them to come to faith in Christ. One our people shared that one of his 3 got saved last week! Then we shared that a 4 year old great grandson of a couple in our church who was diagnosed with leukemia was now in full remission! There was much celebrating in our congregation for both.

-There was a tremendous spirit in our worship service. You couldn’t be in the service and not be impacted yesterday.

-Many people responded to the message at the end of the service.

-The message was on grace. The sermon in a sentence was “Grace is greater.” It is greater than whatever you are facing or fearing. (I preached more than just a sentence, but this is the condensed sermon.)

-Our attendance was very good.

-Our children’s church crowd was in the service for all the music, prayer time and giving. They added a lot of energy to the room. They also are not inhibited, so they were clapping and moving during the music. I loved it!!!

-There were great spiritual conversations taking place after the service concluded. I love hearing those conversations.

-I had a couple of people approach me after the service to let me know they would gone next Sunday. But the reason they were informing me of this is that they wanted to let me know they were willing to help with an event that is happening in 2 weeks. Since they won’t be here next week to get all the details they wanted to get in on serving. How cool is that?

-I have another anniversary of my birth tomorrow. I am told it is a big one. I assume I will feel much the same tomorrow morning as did today and I want to celebrate each day. But it is kind of fun to enter a new decade. Hey, it’s just a number, albeit a big number, but I am not deciding what I can and cannot do based on age. So let’s eat some cake, or better yet let’s eat some really spicy food.

This week I pray that you find some things to celebrate. If you can’t think of anything feel free to celebrate my birthday.

Monday Musings …

Yesterday was a banner day in our church and in my personal life as well. We had a phenomenal day at church and it was the 40th anniversary of my wedding day. (You can read some personal stuff about that milestone in my previous 2 posts.)

-We celebrated our Vacation Bible School (VBS) yesterday. We finished it a week ago but we chose to have our celebration yesterday. It was awesome. We had a total of 47 different children attend VBS and we 35 of them come back for this celebration.

-The kids did fantastic. They sang, they did some Bible memory and they recounted the main points of every lesson when I quizzed them. Looks like they learned the lessons, now praying that they are really living the lessons.

-There was a lot of energy in the building as we worshiped. I loved it. There were a lot more smiles from the adults yesterday than I normally receive. Wonder what that is all about?

-An older couple came in a few minutes late. The kids were on the platform already doing their thing. This couple sat right in the middle of where the kids had been sitting and would return to sit when they finished. My wife whispered to me that I should go get them to move to some other seats. I said, “No, let ‘em fend for themselves”. It was fun to see the couple’s reaction when 30+ kids surrounded them. The couple handled it great and so did the kids.

-We had the second largest attendance we have had in my time here in Canton. It was awesome to see some parents, and other relatives in attendance who don’t normally attend. Praying that they will take the message the kids, and I, shared and accept it themselves.

-Praying that some of those family members will return and begin attending.

-It was great for our congregation to see the fruit of their prayers, their giving and their faithfulness with a platform full of kids and a sanctuary with so many people in attendance.

-The church had a big meal after the service in honor of our 40th wedding anniversary. The food was great and the cake was delicious. We received so many cards and a wonderful love offering. This church body is good to us and shows us in so many ways week in and week out how much they love us. Ministry is so much fun with a group like this at your side.

-Our 2 daughters, one of our sons-in-law and 4 of our grandkids were able to be with us. One of our sons-in-law was leading worship at his church and our son, daughter-in-law and 5 grandkids are in Africa, but we did hear from all of them. Our house is full and so is my heart.

-We already have some kids saving for next year’s VBS offering! How cool is that?

-Our sound system even cooperated for most of the morning.

-Our District Superintendent slipped into the service and stayed for the meal after. It was great to have him witness what is taking place in Canton. Love that man and his leadership.

-We had a first time visitor come yesterday who didn’t know that we were having our VBS celebration. I hope we didn’t scare them off. But at least they saw a lot of energy, smiles and joy. That should be enough to get them to give us another shot.

Here’s to you finding joy in your service this week. I am praying that each person who reads this is encouraged and has a reminder that God is present where you are and that you are loved.

Monday Morning Musings …

We finally had a true summer Sunday. The weather was warm and it hasn’t rained in 8 or 9 days and many people were gone. It is okay, one out of the first 10 Sundays of the summer is okay. It was still another good day …

-The spirit during our time of music in worship yesterday was tremendous and that was with some significant sound issues. People were really singing out aloud. Maybe it was because I told them that I had decided the music goes better with motions, after experiencing worship with our Vacation Bible School kids this past week. I told the congregation as we began that after watching the kids in VBS that if the adults didn’t sing out I was going to make them do motions with all the songs. Maybe I need to make that threat every week. Just kidding, sort of.

-It was so fun to share with the entire congregation that our kids brought in $1,000 for kids in Kenya during VBS.

-We had a missionary speak during worship and he is serving in Kenya. That worked out great given our focus for giving during VBS. He and his college student daughter also shared with all of our children during Sunday School. That was a great follow up for our kids after VBS.

-I love hearing from people who are passionate about serving Christ. I was especially moved hearing from the missionary’s daughter about her passion to serve those in need wherever she is located.

-Our attendance was below our last year’s average for the first time all summer. The good news is that it was just barely below. But it was the first time it has felt like a summer Sunday.

-I am excited that a couple of our kids, and some of our grandkids, will be in worship with us next Sunday. They are coming in to help us celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Even better news is that will all be staying with us for 3 or 4 days. The other kid, and grandkids, have a great excuse for not being here, they are serving in Kenya. We hope to Skype with them.

-I am very excited to hear from a few people this weekend who are desiring to serve in ministry. These are people who have not been serving until now. In fact, they are very excited to begin serving. Good things really are happening in Canton.

-Loved getting together with some of the people from our small group last evening. We will be starting a couple of new groups out of this group in a few weeks. It is exciting to think of reaching new people, seeing new relationships begin and seeing people step up in leadership.

-My wife and I enjoyed having lunch with the missionary and his daughter. They serve a little over an hour from where our son and family are serving. We were able to talk about some familiar places.

-Next Sunday will be our celebration of Vacation Bible School. They kids will be sharing in song, memory verses and sharing about their giving. I am so excited to see them all together again and I am praying that many of their family members come and experience this with them. I am excited for our whole congregation to see and share in this outstanding event as well. For many who give faithfully to see that their giving is going to reach many children and families in our community.

Here’s hoping that you are already looking forward to next Sunday. I am praying that you will have many opportunities to encourage someone this week.

Monday Morning Musings …

Yesterday was our unofficial kick-off for Vacation Bible School. It made for a very interesting day …

-Vacation Bible School begins tonight.

-Our unofficial kick-off to Vacation Bible School (VBS) was a success. The building was already decorated for VBS. The adults had to duck and dodge some of the decorations. You post and hang things a little lower for children. The platform had been transformed and the worship team and I ministered in the middle of the decorations and props. I loved it, not so sure about some of our adults. Oh well, it is for the kids anyway.

-I preached on the focus of our VBS, which is God’s love. God’s love is incredible, faithful, invincible, unconditional and real. I preached on God’s love is real and what that means for us.

-Maybe it was all the decorations, maybe it was the anticipation of VBS or maybe it was all of the pizza I ate last week but I got very fired up while preaching yesterday.

-We had some major sound issues again yesterday. We really must start addressing this problem.

-Even with the sound issues our worship team did a great job of creating a wonderful spirit during our time of worship.

-We had good attendance once again. This has been a very good summer. We have not had a Sunday with an attendance less than our yearly average from last year. Yeah for no summer slump.

-Not everything is roses. Besides the sound issues I received my first “anonymous complaint” yesterday. I learned a long time ago not to get worked up over anonymous complaints because I can do nothing to dialog with the person who does not put their name on something. I am open to discussing issues, big or small, but it is not possible without a name.

-I received a very encouraging text yesterday afternoon. The person was asking for prayer about a personal struggle in their life. Part of my message yesterday was about God’s love being able to break the chains in our lives. I described a chain as anything that holds you down and prevents you from doing, and being, what God is calling you to do and be. This person took a major step forward in following Christ. Admission is a huge part in overcoming any chain in a person’s life. I loved getting that text, and it had a name on it, so I can follow up with them.

-We are praying earnestly for VBS. For the workers to be able to do get here without work or illness stopping them. Praying for children to come. Praying for lives to be changed and impacted by the love of Jesus. Praying for no rain so the outdoor activities can take place. For the energy and attitudes of the workers to remain high. Praying for impact on unchurched families.

Here’s hoping that receive some reminders this week that God’s love is real.

Monday Morning Musings …

This has been a different summer up to this point. We have had a lot more rain than normal, until last week the temperatures have been well below normal, our summer attendance has been much higher than normal and we are seeing incredible spiritual growth in many people this summer. Oops, I think I already started my musings …

-Our church participated with 6 or 8 other churches, and our local police, to give away two or three hundred backpacks filled with school supplies to elementary and middle school students. Our group also provided a free evening of swimming at the city’s large swimming pool and thanks to a generous donation from a local business we were able to pay for a meal for the students and their families as well. The weather cooperated, people were gracious and the volunteers served with joy. Thanks to all who brought supplies, gave money for supplies, helped with backpacks or who helped give them away. What a great time of watching churches work together and make an impact in our community.

-Yesterday’s message was looking at what Jesus said about solid foundations in your life and making sure your walk matches your talk. No matter what you say, your true convictions are shown by your behavior. Not just your public behavior but what you do when no one is looking as well.

-We celebrated a great praise yesterday. A lady shared with us that her 4 year old great-grandson, for whom we have been praying fervently, is now seeing a shrinking of his cancer! The joy on she and her husband’s face was awesome and our people spontaneously cheered when this was shared.

-Our music was definitely blessed and really moved people during our worship service.

-There were people who came to the altar during our prayer time and there is much evidence that people are really praying throughout the week.

-The congregation was very engaged during the sermon. I even received a text last evening from a young man sharing how God spoke to him during the message. Those types of texts are awesome.

-In my reading through the Bible I am in the Psalms and I Corinthians. The words of the Psalms have been coming alive to me in fresh and powerful ways. Some of it is encouraging and some of it is convicting. But I believe this my most powerful time of reading the Psalms. God’s word is alive.

-We are in a full sprint to finish preparations for our Vacation Bible School which begins next Monday evening. No matter what happens with the children I know that it will change a lot of adults because so many people are working together, are praying and preparing together. For many years I missed the point that the most powerful part of any all church focus, such as Vacation Bible School or revival services, is often what happens among the people who serve side by side through the event.

-This week the church will be transformed with decorations and props for Vacation Bible School. I can’t wait for everyone to see it and to be able to preach next Sunday in midst of the decorations.

-I am working on a couple of future posts about what I have learned during 40 years of marriage. In 3 weeks my wife and I will celebrate the 40th anniversary of our wedding day. I told her this week that I feel much better about us, our marriage and our future than I did on our wedding day. I am a 40 year member of the “Married Way Out of My League Club”.

Here’s hoping you have something to look forward to this week and that you will seek out someone to encourage today.

Monday Morning Musings …

This was a very good Sunday once again. There are so many positive things happening and I am praying that this momentum will carry us right through any attempts to slow things down that often come from those who feel their church is changing too quickly. As for yesterday’s musings …

-As soon as the worship service finished a lady walked up to me and said, “I am ready to be saved.” That is the start of a great conversation. In a little while she prayed to receive Christ as her personal savior! Moments like those never get old.

-We had a couple from our church celebrate 50 years of marriage yesterday afternoon. I love those kind of celebrations and the example of commitment and love that it is to our community.

-We had some sound issues again. I am praying that we can get our sound system overhauled before the end of this year.

-We had a tremendous time of prayer around the altar in the middle of our worship service. There seems to be more and more people who are really becoming praying people, instead of just people who sometimes pray. Only good things can result for this move in our congregation.

-There was a very good spirit throughout our time of worship. From the music, to the singing, in prayer, in the giving of tithes and offerings, in the message and the response time.

-Our attendance was down, but was still very good for the July 4th weekend and it was right at our average attendance for last year. Not bad for a holiday weekend.

-I am very excited that we had 37 people who committed to be a part of our discipleship ministry. Some are looking to be discipled and a large number also expressed interest in learning to disciple others. That is very encouraging.

-Yesterday I was reflecting on how good our church lawn and building looked. I am so grateful for the 3 men who care for the lawn, and we have a lot of lawn. They sacrifice a lot of time and they often use their own equipment. I am also thankful for the 20+ people who volunteer to clean our building. They range in age from 5 years old to 75 years old. They do a great job. Thanks to all of those who give in these areas of ministry. You usually toil out of people’s sight. I want you to know that I see you and am so thankful for all you do. Your service makes a big difference in the life our church.

-With each passing week my wife and I feel more and more at home in Canton.

-I am more convinced than ever that God has great plans for our church. I believed this when I arrived a year and a half ago, but I believe it even stronger today.

Here’s hoping you believe that God is up to good things where you are serving.

Dennis

Monday Morning Musings …

It is so exciting to be a part of a special move of God. We are in the midst of that here in Canton. Yesterday was more evidence of special things taking place in our church and community…

-The best part of yesterday was witnessing 3 people make a commitment to accept Jesus as their personal savior! Now we must walk alongside them as they grow in their relationship with Christ.

-We had a lot of children in attendance yesterday. Their energy was awesome. Our children’s workers are the best, but they were worn out when the morning was over. Thanks to all who serve in the ministries with our children.

-Our time of greeting and fellowship during the worship service was fun. People were all over the sanctuary greeting people, giving hugs and handshakes. The volume during the greeting time was loud. I loved it!

-We had a good time of testimonies during our worship service.

-Our worship attendance was outstanding. So far we are ignoring the typical summer slump.

-We have had a huge run of people with significant physical needs. We had 4 people have surgery last week. I am ready for this trend to change.

-My wife and I were out of town from Sunday afternoon to Friday afternoon. We were attending a conference on leading worship. Actually my wife was really the one attending the conference, I was along for the ride and went to the evening sessions. The trip allowed us to see quite a bit of family since the conference was near where many of them live.  I was able to spend some time with my Dad and Stepmom. We were able to spend time with our youngest daughter and son-in-law as well. They were attending the conference and brought 4 young adults from their church with them. It was great to watch them minister with this group.

-The evening times of worship at the conference last week were awesome. They were inspiring and encouraging.

-I am trying to spend some significant time praying and planning for the next year.

-We experienced more monsoon rains Sunday evening. We may not completely dry out until September. Maybe I need to preach on Noah.

-Being gone really messed with my prayer times. I have a routine of Bible reading and prayer when I am home and being gone and in a hotel threw me all out of rhythm. I am looking forward to getting back to my more lengthy times of prayer because I need it.

-It is so encouraging to see the genuine excitement among the core group of people as we continue to grow. They are joyful seeing the growth numerically and spiritually. They don’t seem bothered at all that they have had to sit in different places. This is happening because our new people don’t know the seating arrangements. I love it!!!

Here’s hoping that you are reminded that God is still God, no matter what is taking place around you.

Dennis

Monday Musings …

I am just getting a chance to sit down and write these musings because I traveled out of state for a conference. As for the musings …

-Driving 6 hours immediately after finishing a Sunday morning is not a relaxing exercise. Being able to see my Dad on Father’s Day made the drive worth it. I don’t remember the last time I was with my Dad on Father’s Day. We were also with a lot of other family, some of whom we hadn’t seen in 4 years. It was great to see everyone and catch up.

-We had another great Sunday. God really is doing some great things in Canton. This is a fun season of ministry.

-Our Father’s Day breakfast was tremendous. The food was great, they had real sausage gravy and biscuits, ‘nuff said.

-I loved hearing the sound of laughter, conversations and real fellowship taking place during the breakfast.

-We had great attendance. I love that people continue to invite and expect that we will have new people each week. I especially loved that instead of taking Dad somewhere else to celebrate so many of our families brought Dad to church for a real Father’s Day celebration.

-I took a moment in the service to honor two of our former pastors. I am blessed to have two retired ministers, who used to pastor this church, attending regularly. They are some of my biggest supporters, encouragers and prayer warriors. One of them prayers over me every Sunday before I go to preach and the other calls, or stops by periodically to encourage me and pray with me. So I took a couple of minutes out of my sermon to bring them up front, thank them and honor them.

-The message was on examples. For many people this is a point of pain in some relationships because they have either had no example or bad examples in their lives. We looked at healing from that pain and what to look for in examples that we can follow. There was also a challenge to become an example that others can follow.

-On Saturday there was a big birthday celebration for a sweet lady in our church who just turned 90! How cool is that? This week we have been invited to a birthday party for a girl who just turned 3, how is that for contrast?

-Our giving continues to do well. I am so encouraged by the faithfulness and vision that our people are exercising. Only good things can follow this type of commitment.

-I am really looking forward to having a little extra time to read, pray and maybe do a little writing this week. I will also be able to see my Dad a couple of more times before we head back home. Thanks to our church for allowing us to get away for this event and for covering things while we are gone.

Here’s hoping that you are finding things to encourage you and that you are finding people to encourage.

Dennis

Monday Morning Musings …

We are definitely into summer now. You can tell by the temperatures and a little by how many people are gone. As for the musings …

-Temperature and humidity remained high this week as did the water level. The rain that wouldn’t stop last Sunday returned several times this week which left us with standing water in some places all week.

-We had a great spirit all through the worship service. People seemed very engaged during all parts of the music and they were singing out.

-After a difficult week for many in our congregation we had an outstanding time of prayer during worship. There are a lot of needs in our community but we have many people who are getting very serious about prayer. Good things follow when people get serious about praying.

-We had some great times of discussion with people again this week. Some of the conversations were throughout the week and a few following the message yesterday. Many people are really seeking to follow Christ in all areas of their lives. That is very exciting and encouraging.

-Our attendance was pretty good, especially as you looked at how many were out of town.

-The core group of people who were here when I arrived are very encouraged and excited about the growth and are even excited about what is coming next. I love ministering with people who desire to see more and more people come to know Christ and get connected in the church.

-The message yesterday was on bitterness. It was part of a series on healing relational pain. We examine a pain point in relationships and then look at the healing directed from the Word each week. Bitterness is a tough one, because people don’t usually like to admit it. Several people confessed and committed to letting go of the bitterness. Praying for continued healing for each of them. Part of the next steps in healing was for them to choose someone to be their encourager, and accountability partner, in their healing from bitterness. I am praying for those partnerships.

-We had a good time with a few sharing testimonies during our worship service. What a great time of encouragement.

-We met with a family last evening just for a time of fellowship and had a great time laughing and sharing. I love doing life with this group of people.

-This coming Sunday is the conclusion of the series on relational healing. I am really looking forward to sharing this message and encouraging fathers as well.

Here’s to hoping you find encouragement coming your way from someone this week.
